The village of Netley, also known as Netley Abbey, is on the south coast of Hampshire, close to Southampton. It is a quaint, old-fashioned village flanked on one side by the ruins of Netley Abbey which was established in 1239, while on the outskirts of the village is the Royal Victoria Country Park. The village held its own steeplechase meeting on Monday 18th April 1842 over a 3 mile course of good hunting ground on the edge of the village owned by Mr Griffin. The 4 race card was sponsored by inhabitants of the village, notably Mr E F Walker and Mr Griffin. The first Sweepstake was won by Mr Griffin’s Bobby Trot from Adelaide and Selina. The second Sweepstake over 2 miles went to Mr Taylor’s Parasol in front of Nix-my-Dolly, while the final Sweepstake for farmer’s horses was won by Kitty for Mr Ivens. The main Steeplechase attracted a field of 9 and was won by Mr W Sheppard’s Farmer Jack. |
